Sugar & Salt by Ninotchka Rosca is a short fable about Melchora Aquino (1812-1919). Also known as "Tandang Sora", she played a role in the Philippine Revolution by opening her store as a refuge for the revolutionary Katipuneros and hosting their secret meetings. For her contributions to the Revolution, she was also called the "Grand Woman of Revolution" and the "Mother of Balintawak".
