'GAPÔ (at isang puting Pilipino, sa mundo ng mga Amerikanong kulay brown)
‘GAPÔ, named after the Philippine city Olongapo, is a Filipino novel by Lualhati Bautista. It interweaves the narratives of Michael, a GI baby wrestling with his heritage; Magdalena, a bar hostess yearning for an escape; Ali, seeking a foreign husband for her child; and Modesto, a Filipino worker enduring daily oppression within the military base.
While ‘GAPÔ follows the lives of individuals, it ultimately transcends personal narratives. The city itself becomes a character, symbolizing the Filipino’s struggle against the stranglehold of American laws and culture.
Lualhati Bautista (1945-2023) was a Filipina writer, novelist, liberal activist and political critic. Bautista received Palanca Awards for her novels ‘GAPÔ, Dekada ‘70, and Bata, Bata... Pa’no Ka Ginawa? which highlighted injustices and documented women’s activism during the Marcos era.
