Charlie Samuya Veric’s The Love Of A Certain Age features poetry about a queer romance that occurs between a young and older man, placed within the pretense that they are pilgrims to what Veric defines as ‘Motel Grindr.’ As Veric utilizes Grindr, an app known for gay hook-up culture, he produces such verse that conveys the dynamics among homosexual relationships. Veric approaches this by telling of an encounter in fragments, detailing the beautifully complex nature of a casual yet deeply profound experience of a brief affair. Alongside the ins-and-outs of this dalliance, Veric integrates motifs such as those of Muhammad, Madonna and Child, Shepherd and Lamb to convey a larger picture that goes beyond the fling’s context. He also touches on such subject matters as war within history, upon a philosophical frame that orients the relationship as something more.

Charlie Samuya Veric holds a PhD in American Studies from Yale University, where he was awarded the John Hay Whitney Fellowship. A former fellow of the Johannesburg Institute for Advanced Study and the bestselling author of Histories (2015)Boyhood: A Long Lyric (2017), Children of the Post-colony: Filipino Intellectuals and Decolonization 1964-1972 (2020), and No Country (2021), he is an Associate Professor of English at the Ateneo de Manila University.
