Philippine Woman in America
A collection of thirty-six essays by Cecilia Manguerra Brained published in Philippine American News, 1982-1988.
"I named my column 'Filipina-American Perspective' because my topics are viewed from the point of view of a Filipino American in America. Whether I am looking at events in the Philippines or in America, the writer is this person who has lived in the U.S. for a number of years. I am not only a Filipina, neither am I only an American— I integrate the two cultures. While I make this definition of myself, I hope that my children and grandchildren will not need to call themselves 'Filipino Americans.' I hope that they will be so much part of American society that they won't be asked, 'Where do you come from?' This does not mean that I want them to forget their Filipino heritage, because I do want them to be proud of their background. I guess I long for the days when Filipino Americans will be totally integrated into mainstream American society."
