Edilberto K. Tiempo’s historical novel spans five generations of the Alcantara family in Nueva Vizcaya. The narrative unfolds across six decades, from around 1890 to the early 1950s – from patriarch Capitan Lucas Alcantara to his great-great-grandson Ruben. More than a familial saga, it is a testament to freedom, encapsulating the Filipino struggle against foreign domination throughout historical eras spanning Spanish, American, and Japanese occupations.

“Seesawing through time, the book moves forward in careful segments, almost never lacking in movement, almost never having a surplus of detail or word. It took time to write the novel; it takes time to read, to savor, to be wrapped in its

craft, if not its brilliance. But take time, take Tiempo: this is the Tiempo book that will be difficult to surpass whatever the time.” —J. L. Rivera

Edilberto K. Tiempo (1913-1996) was a fiction writer and literary critic. Edilberto, alongside his wife, National Artist for Literature Edith L. Tiempo, founded the Silliman National Writers Workshop in the Philippines.
