Virginia M. Villanueva's Tales from the Southern Kingdom gathers the legends, folktales and stories that have been told and retold among generations of Tausug, Sama, Jama Mapun, and Badjao communities in the Philippines' southernmost provinces of Sulu and Tawi-Tawi in Mindanao. It aims to preserve the rich cultural and literary heritage of Sulu and Taw-Tawi, which is endangered with the disappearance of traditional story-telling traditions among the younger generation.
