Rainbow for Rima
Rainbow for Rima is a collection of seven short stories by Edilberto K. Tiempo, written for his granddaughter Rima.
While written for his granddaughter who would have been six years old at the time of publication, the storytelling is often dark and haunting. Tiempo notes in his introduction that these stories draw from his and his family’s life experiences, including those from the Second World War. Perhaps this is why he said in his introduction, “I'm hoping that to begin with they are worth rereading. And then when you become a grandmother yourself I hope you find them even better reading.”
Edilberto K. Tiempo (1913-1996) was a Filipino fiction writer and literary critic. He earned his MFA from the University of Iowa and his Ph.D. in English from the University of Denver. A Guggenheim and Rockefeller fellow, Tiempo and his wife Edith L. Tiempo studied literature and creative writing at the Iowa Writers Workshop. Upon returning to the Philippines in 1962, they founded the Silliman National Writers Workshop, the longest-running workshop of its kind in Asia.
