Regular price ₱2,400.00

Paunang Salita is a collection of essays by National Artist for Literature Bienvenido Lumbera. The book originated from the idea of Lumbera’s former students, Perfecto T. Martin and Delfin Tolentino Jr., who wanted to create an anthology of Lumbera’s writings in commemoration of his 80th birthday.

The book serves as a sampling of Lumbera’s writings, showcasing pieces that offer a profound perspective on significant literary works and societal issues and his experiences as a reader and observer of Philippine politics and culture. With his background as an advocate of New Criticism and his involvement in political activism during the Marcos dictatorship, his writings carry the weight of his intellectual and social engagement. Through this collection, he invites readers to explore his evolving perspectives as an editor, teacher, and critical thinker.

Bienvenido Lumbera (1932-2021) is a celebrated Filipino writer, critic who has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Journalism, Literature, and Creative Communication Arts in 1993, the Gawad CCP, Gawad Pambansang Alagad ni Balagtas, Manila Critics’ Circle and the Palanca.
