Social Realism (SR) emerged from the underground during the time of former President Ferdinand Marcos. In the heyday of Philippine modernism, SR was rendered invisible by the art establishment. Emmanuel Torres, curator of the Ateneo Art Gallery (1959-2001), was among the first to recognize the works of social realists as art and during martial law, mounted exhibits of anti-government art by Pablo Baen Santos and Al Manrique among others. This exhibition catalog presents the Ateneo Art Gallery's collection of social realist art from the ‘80s until the 21st century - many overtly political, a few blurring the line between SR and conceptualism.
