Pow Martinez
This is a monograph offering a comprehensive look at the work of Pow Martinez from 2009 to 2023. Written by Tony Godfrey, it features essays interspersed with conversations between author and artist, as well as an additional essay by Gary-Ross Pastrana.
As Pastrana notes, “Rejecting learned notions of skill or mastery, Pow celebrates the pleasure of painting as primarily physical and analog act. Favoring the unsophisticated over the belabored, his works exude an air of innocence and play, with a dose of mischief.”
Pow Martinez (b. 1983, Manila, Philippines; lives and works in Manila) is known for his expressionistic paintings that merge bold colors with demonic, mutant-like figures. Often resembling a beautiful nightmare, his works fuse everyday life with pop culture, resulting in darkly humorous depictions of society’s overconsumption.
