Lee Aguinaldo: In Retrospect
Known for his gestural as well as minimalist hard-edged and color field paintings, Lee Aguinaldo (1933-2007) belonged to the first generation of Philippine abstractionists in the fifties. He was also among the first to adopt ideas of Pop Art, incorporating images from fashion magazines into his oil paintings.
This retrospective mounted by the Ateneo Art Gallery brought together works by Aguinaldo that date back to 1950 until 1979, culled from private collections and include paintings, drawings, collages, and mixed media. Essays by Ma. Victoria Herrera and Clarissa Chikiamco are included in the catalog.
