Faces from Maitum

Regular price ₱2,750.00

In this book, authors Eusebio Z. Dizon and Rey A. Santiago unveil the discovery of anthropomorphic burial jars found in Ayub Cave in Maitum, Sarangani in southern Mindanao. With little historical information available, the meticulous records kept during their excavation become invaluable in reconstructing the social history of the people who left behind these pottery artifacts.

The book includes an overview of prehistoric Philippine pottery with reference to burial jars by noted writer Esperanza Bunag Gatbonton. It also showcases black and white as well as colored plates featuring the excavated burial jars. Furthermore, readers will find valuable appendices covering zooarchaeological materials, pottery analysis, radiocarbon dating, and a broader understanding of prehistoric pottery in Southeast Asia, including pertinent data from China and Japan.

Eusebio Z. Dizon, the founding Director of the Archaeological Studies Program at the University of the Philippines, lends his expertise to this publication. Rey A. Santiago, with his training in Prehistoric Archaeology at the University of Paris and Advanced Underwater Archeology in Thailand, brings a wealth of knowledge to the project. Together, they illuminate a fascinating chapter of Philippine history, offering readers a journey into the past through the burial jars of Maitum.
