John Iremil Teodoro’s essay collection captures the essence of Palawan before it was thrust into the spotlight of mass tourism, when it was hailed as the “last ecological frontier” of the Philippines.

As Teodoro recounts his two-year exploration of Palawan in the late 1990s, readers are transported to a Palawan teeming with adventures that range from dolphin-watching expeditions to witnessing the forest rituals of indigenous communities. The author also weaves ecological insights into his narratives as a reminder of the need to safeguard Palawan’s culture and natural heritage, which are now facing the challenges of unregulated tourism and resource extraction.

John Iremil Teodoro is an Associate Professor and Graduate Program Coordinator at the Literature Department in the College of Liberal Arts of De La Salle University. He writes in Kinaray-a, Filipino, Hiligaynon, and English. His collection of short essays Pagmumuni-muni at Pagtatalak ng Sirenang Nagpapanggap na Prinsesa won the National Book Award from the Manila Critics Circle and the National Book Development Board. He is presently the Secretary General of Unyon ng mga Manunulat sa Pilipinas (UMPIL or the Writers Union of the Philippines).
