Authored by Nathaniel Parker Weston, Specters of Germany: Colonial Rivalry and Scholarship in the Philippine Reform and Revolution delves into the complex dynamics of colonial rivalry between Germany and Spain and its impact on Filipino scholarship and activism in the late 19th century.

In this book, Weston also dissects the works of prominent figures during the era including Gregorio Sancianco, Graciano López Jaena, Pedro Paterno, José Rizal, Isabelo de los Reyes, Mariano Ponce, and other Filipino authors, alongside other influential German-speaking, Spanish, and US writers. Ultimately, Specters of Germany demonstrates how Philippine colonial studies became a formidable tool in the fight for national self-determination and the politics of imperialism that surrounded it.

Nathaniel Parker Weston is a historian who earned his Ph.D. in European and Southeast Asian history from the University of Washington. He is currently an instructor of history at Seattle Central College. His research focuses on racism, imperialism, and resistance.
