Hidden Light: The First Filipino Priests

Hidden Light: The First Filipino Priests

Regular price ₱370.00

This book sheds light on the lives and identities of the first Filipino priests in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Becoming a priest during this period required adopting new moral codes, mastering Spanish and Latin, and living celibate lives in a predominantly polygamous society.

The Hidden Light begins by setting the historical context. It then delves into the first and second groups of Filipino priests ordained between 1698-1706 and 1707-1723, respectively. Appendices further detail the clergy’s chronological groupings, background, and development during the 18th century.

The author, Dr. Luciano P.R. Santiago (1942-2019), was a psychiatrist who graduated from the University of the Philippines College of Medicine. He was inspired to write this book after discovering early archiepiscopal records while researching his family history and their town, Pasig. His scholarly pursuits span genetics, psychiatry, linguistics, genealogy, biography, art, literature, history, and mythology.
