Global Divas: Filipino Gay Men in the Diaspora is an ethnographic study on Filipino gay men in New York City based on fieldwork and interviews conducted between 1990 and 1995. This work focuses on the life narratives of fifty Filipino gay men who create a sense of self and belonging, or citizenship, amid the exigencies of immigration and in the face of emerging notions of global gay identity and cultural practices. Manalansan assesses how queerness functions on a transnational and global scale, delving into themes of diaspora and immigrant life.

Martin F. Manalansan IV is an associate professor of Anthropology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is the editor of Cultural Compass: Ethnographic Explorations of Asian America (2000) and co-editor of Queer Globalizations: Citizenship and the Afterlife of Colonialism (2002).
