La Casa de Dios
La Casa de Dios: The Legacy of Filipino Hispanic Churches in the Philippines explores the country’s over 300 Filipino-Hispanic churches, convents, and ruins through essays, maps, and vintage photographs archived in the Ortigas Foundation Library. More than a mere catalog, Fr. René B. Javellana provides context and an interpretive approach to the interrelationship between Philippine churches and other Hispanic buildings. This book also serves as a practical guide, inviting readers to embark on heritage trails through the nation’s historical and spiritual landscapes.
It began as a personal project of Rafael Ortigas Jr. who was deeply moved by the Spanish heritage of the Philippines. His vision was to document the colonial-era churches through photography not only as a testament to Spanish heritage but also as a witness to the teachings of the Catholic Church.
Fr. René B. Javellana is a Jesuit priest, writer, liturgical artist, and art historian. He is currently an Associate Professor of the Fine Arts Program at the School of Humanities, Ateneo de Manila University. He was the director of the program from 2003-2009.
