Form And Splendor

Regular price ₱12,000.00

Catalog for the exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum Manila from June - October 1998 as part of its Centennial Year Celebration. Form and Splendor highlights the richness and diversity of Cordillera ornamentation, focusing on the personal adornment and jewelry of six major Cordillera ethnic groups - Bontoc, Ifugao, Gaddang, Isneg, Kalinga, and Tinguian.

The Kankanay and Ibaloi, subjected to particularly heavy cultural influences from the outside owing to their proximity to gold and copper mines, are excluded. The Ilongot, though not a Cordillera group per se, live adjacent to the other groups and share headhunting and dress and adornment traditions.

“Cordillera ornament is the original expression of pre-Hispanic Philippine culture. Its aura is distinctly Asian, its earthy directress typically Filipino. It strikes a chord in us. We respond to its simplicity, directness of design, integrity of materials and its talismanic, fetishistic power.” Includes text by Roberto Maramba and photographs by Masato Yokoyama.
