Part of the Modern Heroes for the Filipino Youth series, Legacy tells the story of National Artist for Theater and Film Lamberto V. Avellana (1915-1991). Avellana had the distinction of being called “The Boy Wonder of Philippine Movies” as early as 1939, with the release of his first film SakayHe was the first to use the motion picture camera to establish a point-of-view, a move that revolutionized the techniques of film narration. He had an illustrious career spanning six decades, directing over seventy films including, Anak Dalita (1956), which won the Grand Prix at the 1956 Asia-Pacific Film Festival; Badjao (1957), for which he won the Best Director of Asia award; and Portrait of the Artist as Filipino (1956), written by Nick Joaquin and starring Lamberto's wife Daisy Avellana. The Avellanas were also active in theater and together established the Barangay Theater Guild, staging many Filipino and classical plays such as those by Shakespeare and Ibsen.
