The history of literary publishing in the Philippines is chronicled in this book, from 1593 when the first book was printed in the Philippines to 2003 when the first nationwide survey on reading preferences and attitudes were conducted. Author Patricia May B. Jurilla focuses on Tagalog bestsellers of the 20th century and reflects on their impact on culture, society and politics. In the chapters, she discusses Philippine metrical romances in the early 20th century, Aliwan (1945-1947) and the Tagalog novel, Philippine comic publishing from the late 1940s to the mid 1980s, and Filipino romance novels of the late 20th century.
