Regular price ₱2,800.00

This is the first book to put together a comprehensive survey of Dominador Castañeda's life and work.

Initiated by the family with the support of the University of the Philippines, this book presents three essays: "Domining's Way" by Angela C. Melo, the artist's granddaughter, "Atmosphere of the Subject" by Patrick Flores, and "Dominador Castañeda and the UP School of Fine Arts" by Robert G. Paulino.

As a painter, Dominador Castañeda was often compared to Fernando Amorsolo. To quote Alfredo Roces' text for the artist's posthumous exhibition in 1971: "Castañeda returned to the Philippines from studies abroad to find himself between the overpowering shadow of the then-dean of Philippines 'conservative' painting, Fernando Amorsolo, and the noisy polemical modernist movement sparked by Victorio Edades. In negotiating his own artistic course between both sides, Castañeda suffered undeserved obscurity".

As a teacher, Castañeda taught at the UP School of Fine Arts from 1939 to 1967 and served as dean of the college from 1955 to 1961. His former students and/or subsequent colleagues include Napoleon Abueva, Jose Joya, Rodolfo Paras-Perez, Larry Alcala, Manuel Antonio Rodriguez Sr., Carlos P. Valino Jr., Froilan T. Madriñan Jr. Abdulmari Imao, Benedicto 'BenCab' Cabrera, Juvenal Sanso, Dani Aguila and Romi Mananquil to name a few.

As a writer, his strong interest in art history led him to spearhead a reference book, Art in the Philippines, published by The Institute of Asian Studies, Univesity of the Philippines, in 1964.

His artworks are in the following institutional collections: National Museum, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, Lopez Museum, UP Vargas Museum, Bulwagan ng Dangal, UP College of Law, and UP College of Fine Arts.
