Titamarialmairma: Conversations with 19th Century Artists
An accompanying publication to the TITAMARIAALMAIRMA exhibition – the title a combination of the first names of the participating artists: Tita Lim, Maria Taniguchi, Alma “Urduja” Quinto, and Irma Lacorte – curated by Flaudette May V. Datuin in 2000. It contains an essay from the curator and insights from the artists regarding their works inspired by different women in the 19th century. Datuin writes:
“As a collective and as individuals, TITAMARIAALMAIRMA thumb their noses and make faces at the 19th century, and its modes of erasures, surveillance, and oppression. In the process, they make do and make the best of the historical givens of a period, the echoes of which reverberate to the present.”
