San Agustin: Art & History 1571-2000
San Agustin is the first church built in the center of Intramuros, Manila. Initially made out of nipa and wood, the church was rebuilt with stone and mortar over a twenty-year period (1587-1607). It has survived centuries of wars and natural calamities, to become the venerable institution that it is today.
This book by Pedro G. Galende, OSA and Regalado Trota Jose is a history and guide to one of the most enduring monuments of Manila. Divided into two sections, the first discusses the origin and progress of the Augustinian Order in the Philippines, the history of the church and monastery, and the events that mark their 400-year history. The second is a detailed "walking tour" of the San Agustin complex and the various building and art objects in its collection.
