Angela Stuart-Santiago’s book, based on the memoirs in Spanish of her grandmother Concepcion Herrera Vda. De Umali, weaves together five stories from the late 19th century until the 1950s. While it is a microhistory of a particular Filipino family in Quezon province, it also reflects everyday life in the countryside under successive colonial and national regimes.
