John N. Schumacher's book explores the part of Filipino priests in the development of the mainstream of national consciousness leading to the revolution and the role they played in sustaining the loyalty of the masses to the revolutionary cause. It shows this role to have been crucial to the success or failure of the struggle against the Americans. It also provides new perspectives on class conflict and on the varying regional responses to the national struggle for independence, as well as on the related nationalist struggle within the Church.
