Revisiting Usog, Pasma, Kulam
Michael L. Tan’s book looks at folk illnesses in the Philippines including, as the title suggests, ‘usog,’ pasma,’ and ‘kulam’. Rather than seeing them as superstitions, Tan explains the broader social and cultural contexts of these concepts. He discusses them according to their perceived causes, broadly grouping them into three clusters: mystical, personalistic, and naturalistic. Using different social science perspectives, Tan explores the deeper meanings of these illnesses and their links to social norms, tensions, and conflicts.
