Power And Gold: Jewelry from Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines
An accompanying publication of an exhibition of ethnic jewelry from Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines, island cultures which boasted superb indigenous art traditions. Serving mainly as symbols of rank, as ritual gifts in a variety of socially important exchanges, or as powerful religious objects, the jewelry described in this catalog was investigated through fieldwork and archival research by Susan Rodgers, professor of Anthropology at Ohio University. Her study has resulted in the preservation of valuable information from elderly village ritual experts. Many of the jewelry included in the exhibition and catalog have never been published, and most of them were exhibited for the first time.
