Palabunibunyan: A Repetoire of Music Pieces for the Maguindanaon Kulintangan

Regular price ₱1,500.00

In this book, Aga Mayo Butocan, a kulintang master from Sultan Kudarat, provides an overview of the rich musical tradition of Mindanao, the Palabunibunyan, a five-piece ensemble of instruments composed of the kulintang, agong, dabakan, gandingan, and babandir, local to Maguindanao in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.

The author pioneered the formal teaching of these traditional musical instruments through her own method- a number notation system- when Dr. Jose Maceda invited her to teach at the UP College of Music, the University of the Philippines in the 1960s. She has performed kulintang music in festivals and delivered lectures in Japan, Germany, France, Switzerland, Italy, Taiwan, and the United States. She was awarded the Gawad Tanglaw ng Lahi at Ateneo's Special Academic Convocation on September 27, 2016.
