Part of the Art and Culture of the Philippines series, this monograph by E. Aguilar Cruz aims to introduce the life and work of Juan Luna (1857-1899), the first Filipino to achieve renown in Europe when he won the highest award at the National Exposition of Fine Arts in Madrid in 1884 for his painting, the Spolarium. He left Madrid and sought fame in Paris, where he eventually turned his back on historical canvasses and devoted himself to portraits, landscapes and scenes of everyday life.
