Laon-Laon: Perspectives In Transmission and Pedagogy of Musical Traditions In Post-Colonial Southeast Asia
Studies and observations of musical traditions and artistic practices in the Philippines, Thailand, and Indonesia are compiled in this book, particularly how colonization and globalization affect their transmission and preservation for the benefit of future generations. Assimilation of other cultures, especially of the colonizers, may undermine, corrode, or dramatically alter musical traditions. This book by Ramon P. Santos focuses on three major factors that contribute to change and continuity in the realm of musical transmission: human resources, the institutional agency, and the social environment. The book also aims to expand ethnomusicology in Asia, which does not fully address issues of transmission and acculturation in modern times.
