Fortress of Empire
Rene B. Javellana, SJ’s ‘Fortress of Empire’ focuses on the architecture of fortifications and situates this form in the context of social and historical forces that made the Philippines a walled archipelago. The book surveys indigenous and colonial fortifications throughout the country, from the 'ijang' of the Batans, the 'muog' of the Tagalogs, the 'ilihan' of the Visayans and the 'kuta' of the Muslims to the 'fuerzas' and 'baluartes' of the Spanish period. Aside from maps, which show the locations of the forts and watchtowers featured in the book, it also includes archival images, artist’s renderings, isometric drawings, and other additional reference materials.
