Fernando Zobel c. 1959
An accompanying catalogue of the exhibition of Fernando Zobel's early works at Galeria Cayon in Spain in 2015. Curated by Rafael Perez-Madero, the exhibition highlights Zobel's paintings created around 1959, when he decided to leave Manila and spend a year in Madrid. Considered as an "essential prelude to his subsequent relocation to Spain", the period is described as his "affirming years", which had a "crucial impact on his artistic destiny". During that time he began his experimentations with linear expressions, using syringes to create calligraphic paintings such as his seminal "Saetas" and "Negra" series.
