Cockfight, Horserace, Boxing Match
In this book, Sheila S. Coronel, Yvonne T. Chua, and Isagani de Castro examine how the media covered the 2004 elections in the Philippines. Criticized for its superficiality, media coverage of elections, in the Philippines and elsewhere, has been consumed by the horserace or cockfight aspect of the campaign, focusing on who's leading and who's losing out. Coronel looks at the process in which media content is produced and the factors that influence the direction of election reporting. Chua focuses on the reporters who covered the campaign, their attitude and preparedness for the job and the problems they faced, while de Castro presents the personal assessment of the chiefs of media bureaus of the five presidential candidates.
