Classical Forms of Theater in Asia
Authored by Natividad P. Crame Rogers, this book documents the state of classical theater in Asia from 1959-1965. It surveys major forms of classical theater and well-known examples of these forms in India, Ceylon (Sri Lanka), Burma (Myanmar), Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Indonesia, China, Hong Kong, Korea, Japan, and the Philippines. It describes origins, principles, techniques, local leaders, and examples, and includes photographs of actual performances, sketches, and clippings. For the Philippines, reference is made to the traditional senakulo, the indigenized sarsuela, and the drama, “Portrait of the Artist as Filipino” by National Artist Nick Joaquin.
