Yvette Pantilla-Carpio’s short stories explore the inner lives of people who exist on the emotional and psychological margins of their communities.  In stories that cross several literary genres like literary fiction, magical realism, realism and science fiction, Carpio empathetically weaves stories of characters who are judged, underestimated, dismissed, and locked into society’s perceptions.
Whether it’s a teacher on a government assignment in Batanes, the leader of a spaceship of Earth refugees, a woman visiting an old flame in a foreign country, a niece organizing her aunt’s wake and funeral, or a woman recounting her past relationships’ connections with bodies of water, Carpio unlocks the greatest prisons of our preconceived ideas of ourselves, and those we call Others.

Carpio’s short stories, creative nonfiction, and features on arts, culture, and design have been published in Philippines Free Press, Business World, the Philippine Star, The Manila Bulletin, among others. In 2008, she was shortlisted for the David TK Wong Fellowship of the University of East Anglia, Norwich, UK, for short fiction.
