Colonial Manila 1909-1912

Regular price ₱585.00

Translated and edited by Otto Van Den Muijzenberg, Colonial Manila 1909-1912 gather the travel accounts of three Dutch publics intellectuals who separately visited Manila around 1910: feminist doctor Aletta Jacobs, orientalist scholar Gerret Rouffaer and ethnologist Hendrik Muller, who were all curious to see how the Americans were implementing their colonial policy of "benevolent assimilation". Adding to the social history of the city and the country at a time when Americans were strengthening their hold over their new colony, the authors also provide a glimpse of official society and informal intellectual networks, characterized by friendships and animosities.
