The Art of Malang as Filipino
A monograph on the life and art of Mauro Malang Santos (1928-2017) by Juan Gatbonton and Alya Honasan, this book charts the development of Malang's work from the 1950s to the 2000s. Trained by the famed cartoonist, Liborio 'Gat' Gatbonton, Malang began his career making illustration and cartoons for The Manila Chronicle. He became known for his long-running daily comic strip Kosme, The Cop, which he began in the late 1940s. He also worked as a designer for numerous books and magazines and established galleries specializing in comics and paintings. While he devoted much of his career in the graphic arts, he later shifted to painting, creating stylized renderings of women, landscapes and other genre scenes. He was the recipient of several awards from the Art Association of the Philippines and was named one of the Ten Young Outstanding Men in 1963. He also received the Patnubay ng Sining at Kalinangan from the City of Manila in 1981.
