An American Doctor's Odyssey
Originally published in 1936 with the full title, An American Doctor's Odyssey: Adventures in Forty-Five Countries, this abridged version of the memoirs of Dr. Victor George Heiser focuses on his years spent in the Philippines. Dr. Heiser began his public health career in 1898 and came to the Philippines in 1902 first as the chief quarantine officer before being appointed as the Director of Health. He implemented many public health programs to combat malaria, smallpox, beriberi, cholera, leprosy and other tropical afflictions and was instrumental in the establishment of the Culion Leper Colony in Palawan.
