Roberto Chabet (1937 – 2013) is arguably the most significant Filipino artist of the post-war generation. He is known for his critical and conceptual works including drawings, collages and installations using found objects and other everyday material. Breaking away from the rigid formalisms of Modern art in the Philippines in the 60s, he referred to ‘the ephemeral, the fugitive and the contingent in art. His works expand the language of conceptualism, carrying a richness of meanings drawn from memory, myth, history and other subjectivities.

The first retrospective of his work, Chabet: 50 Years, was held in 2011 – 2012 to mark his fifty years of practice and celebrate his contributions to Philippine art. This publication documents the yearlong series of eighteen exhibitions at various venues in Singapore, Hong Kong and Manila featuring the works of Chabet and over 80 Filipino artists who were all mentored by him.
